\u201cIs she alive?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The question came so softly that Denise felt it in her spine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYes. But she\u2019s critical, and she\u2019s pregnant.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Silence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then: \u201cSeal the floor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m sorry?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cDo not put her name in the system where press, police, or political staff can see it. Do not let her husband near her. Do not move her without my authorization.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cMr. Moretti, you don\u2019t have medical authority here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI will in seven minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The line went dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Eight minutes later, three black Escalades slid into the ambulance bay with no sirens and no hesitation. Men in dark suits entered first, rain shining on their shoulders, their faces disciplined enough to be mistaken for federal agents until one noticed the way everyone stepped aside without being asked. Then Luca Moretti came through the doors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He did not look like the devil Grant Vale had described on television.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He looked worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He was tall, broad-shouldered, black-haired, and immaculately dressed despite the storm. His coat hung open over a charcoal suit, his tie gone, his face carved into a restraint so severe it seemed painful. Only his eyes betrayed him. They were dark and burning, sweeping the emergency room until they landed on the hallway marked TRAUMA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Denise stepped forward because someone had to. \u201cMr. Moretti, this is a restricted area. Mrs. Vale\u2019s legal next of kin\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Luca looked at her, and every rehearsed sentence died.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI am not here to argue procedure while she bleeds,\u201d he said. \u201cTake me to her.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cHer husband has already been notified by local police,\u201d Denise said before she could stop herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Something changed in Luca\u2019s expression. Not surprise. Confirmation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThen you have less time than you think,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Feldman came out of Trauma Two at that moment, gloves bloody, mask hanging below his chin. \u201cWho are you?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe man she asked for.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The doctor\u2019s eyes flicked toward Denise, who nodded uneasily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Feldman did not care about politics or criminal rumors while a patient was dying. He looked Luca over once and said, \u201cShe\u2019s alive, but barely. Partial placental abruption, internal bleeding, trauma to the ribs. We\u2019re taking her up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cThe baby?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cStill has a heartbeat.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Luca\u2019s face lost all color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For the first time since entering the hospital, he looked less like a man who controlled a city and more like someone who had been hit without warning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cSave them,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cWe are trying.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Luca stepped close enough that the doctor could see the rainwater on his eyelashes. \u201cTry like the world ends if you fail.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Dr. Feldman did not flinch. \u201cThen get out of my hallway and let me work.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
For one tense second, every Moretti man in the corridor held still.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then Luca moved aside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
As the gurney rushed past, Claire turned her face slightly. She was unconscious, bruised, and terrifyingly still beneath the oxygen mask. Luca reached out but stopped before touching her, as if even his hand might hurt her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Her blood had soaked into the white sheet near her hip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Luca stared at it, and a memory opened beneath him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Six months earlier, he had found Claire Vale behind the Boston Public Library after a fundraiser for Grant\u2019s campaign. Snow had been falling in pale flakes under the streetlights. She had been standing near the service alley in a blue evening gown, one earring missing, her cheek red where a handprint was already rising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Luca had gone there for a private meeting with a judge whose debts had outlived his courage. He had not gone there to rescue the wife of his enemy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Claire had looked at him and straightened her spine as if dignity were the last coat she owned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cYou shouldn\u2019t be here,\u201d she had said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cNeither should you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
\u201cI\u2019m waiting for my driver.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
