You just never gave me an actual reason.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Her eyes shifted toward my husband, Luke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He stood near the counter with his arms crossed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That immediately annoyed me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whenever Kayla mentioned Ethan\u2019s school, she looked at Luke as though she expected him to take her side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He never did.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But he never told her to stop, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is one of the best schools in the area,\u201d I said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kayla sighed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat isn\u2019t the issue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen what is?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once again, she looked at Luke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He looked away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My patience finally ran out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSeriously, Kayla. I can\u2019t be late!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luke groaned into his pillow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I laughed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYes, school day.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By 7:30, Ethan had eaten half a waffle, spilled orange juice on his shirt, changed clothes, and asked at least six times if he could carry his own backpack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As soon as we parked near the school, he practically dragged us toward the entrance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then I saw Kayla.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She was standing near the gate holding a huge bouquet of flowers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I stopped in my tracks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Luke nearly bumped into me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Then he followed my gaze and saw his mother.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Before I could say anything, Ethan ran toward her.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGrandma!
